Spatial experience for Dutch Design week 2024.
"Unprocessed Process Space" is an immersive spatial design installation that delves into the healing journey from trauma through the methods of “Slow Art” and spatial design. This project invites participants to tangibly and sensorially engage with the often-invisible process of trauma recovery, offering a personal perspective on healing. Drawing inspiration from trauma experts like Gabor Maté, who describes trauma as “... a lifelong suppression of emotions, but believes that confronting it can lead to innovative solutions…” (From: The Wisdom of Trauma, 2021). The installation integrates their insights to foster a deeper understanding of the healing process. It serves as a visualisation of introspection, where the space itself becomes a canvas for exploring the mind and the layers of trauma. The repetitive act of drawing within the installation evokes raw, intuitive emotions, mirroring the poetic and often cyclical nature of healing.

Stages of Exploration
Recognizing that trauma lingers throughout our lives, often triggered by subtle, everyday experiences, "Unprocessed Process Space" is divided into two distinct stages. The first stage is an exploration of the mind, aiming to uncover the roots of trauma. The second stage centres on acknowledging these wounds and engaging with the final installation, which envelops participants in a sensory experience. Through sounds of sketching and scribbling, digital projections, and interactive drawing elements, visitors are invited to enter a hidden layer of reality, reflecting the depth and complexity of the healing process.
Transformative Environment
This installation aspires to create a transformative environment that not only explores trauma and recovery but also offers an alternative approach to emotional and psychological healing through creative expression. It aims to raise awareness, encouraging viewers to embark on their own journey of self-reflection and healing.

Visualizing Trauma and the Healing Process.
This installation visualizes the path from trauma to healing, offering visitors an opportunity to step into a reflective space that captures the complexities of emotional recovery. The design transforms the often internal and invisible impact of trauma into a tangible experience, creating an environment that, while inspired by painful memories, also fosters calm and introspection. By presenting the darker sides of the human experience in a poetic light, the space invites participants to explore their own emotions in an unexpected way. The project intertwines personal narratives with theoretical insights, demonstrating how design can be used not only as a medium for creative expression but also as a therapeutic tool that promotes awareness and understanding of trauma’s profound effects.
"Processing the Unprocessed" is an installation that reflects how the mind copes with trauma and the continuous process of healing. Acknowledging that trauma recovery is a complex and non-linear process, the "Unprocessed Process Space" externalizes this internal journey, creating an immersive environment where visitors are encouraged to slowly explore and engage with their surroundings—whether standing or lying down. By incorporating "Slow Art," the installation invites participants to engage deeply, taking time to uncover the layers of their experiences. This gradual, mindful approach mirrors the nature of healing, where pain is slowly processed and space is created for reflection and integration. Through the use of visual art, audio, light, shadow, and carefully curated personal narratives, the installation fosters a tranquil, meditative state, emphasizing the shared human experience of trauma and highlighting the potential for healing through connection and empathy. This multi-sensory environment illustrates the non-linear nature of healing, where emotions are not just felt but seen and experienced in multifaceted ways.
"Processing the Unprocessed" captures a deeply personal journey of confronting and healing from trauma through creative means. The installation is divided into four key components—the Brain rooms, Memory Wall, Drawing System, and Balcony Drawings—each using different artistic techniques to represent stages of the healing process. The Brain Rooms delve into the mind, exploring various emotions to uncover the origins of trauma. The Memory Wall transforms personal sketches into digital animations that evoke the emotional aftermath of trauma, from feelings of disarray to moments of clarity. The Drawing System documents daily reflections on a continuous 10-meter roll of paper, symbolizing the unfolding and evolving nature of personal recovery. The Balcony Drawings incorporate light and shadow to explore the passage of time and the gradual process of healing. By presenting these elements in an interactive and immersive format, the installation not only showcases the power of art as a therapeutic tool but also engages visitors in a collective exploration of trauma's impact. By integrating more insights from the trauma specialist Gabor Maté, who argues that “through healing, suppressed energy is liberated, enabling a fuller engagement with life” (From: The Wisdom of Trauma, 2021). The installation provides a holistic perspective on the mind-body connection, encouraging a trauma-informed understanding of recovery and highlighting the importance of empathy and awareness in the healing journey.
